David “Chris” Maland, Vermont

Vermont – David “Chris” Maland, a 44-year-old U.S. Border Patrol agent, was tragically killed in the line of duty on January 19, 2025, in Vermont.

Maland, a Minnesota native, was fatally shot while conducting a traffic stop on Interstate 91 near Coventry, Vermont, at approximately 3:15 p.m. on Monday.

The FBI confirmed his identity and revealed that Maland was a veteran of the United States Air Force before dedicating 15 years to the Border Patrol, where he served on both the southern and northern U.S. borders.

Maland was a graduate of Fairmont High School and was well-respected among his peers.

The circumstances leading to the shooting remain under investigation, though authorities have confirmed that the shooter, a German national in the U.S. on a valid visa, has been apprehended.

This tragic incident marks the first death of a Border Patrol agent while on duty in more than a decade.

The FBI has described the investigation as “extremely active,” with federal, state, and local agencies working together to uncover more details.

The community and fellow law enforcement officers have expressed their heartfelt condolences, with many sharing their thoughts on social media.

“Such a sad loss for the community,” one Facebook user commented. “My heart goes out to his family.”

Chris Maland is survived by his loved ones, who are grieving the loss of a devoted agent, veteran, and family member.
