Newport, Vermont – David Christopher Maland, a dedicated U.S. Border Patrol agent, tragically lost his life on January 20, 2025, while on duty in Newport, Vermont.
The 44-year-old Minnesota native was fatally shot during a routine traffic stop on Interstate 91 near the Canadian border.
Maland, who was known as "Chris" to family and friends, had served as a Border Patrol agent for over nine years, after a distinguished career in the United States Air Force.
He was a graduate of Fairmont High School and a proud veteran, having served his country with honor both in the military and as a federal agent.
Authorities confirmed that the shooting occurred at approximately 3:15 p.m.
The FBI stated that one suspect was killed in the incident, while a second suspect was injured and is in federal custody.
This marks the first time in more than a decade that a Border Patrol agent has died in the line of duty.
Chris Maland is survived by his mother, father, brother, and girlfriend, who are deeply mourning his loss.
The FBI is currently leading an active investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
On social media, friends and colleagues expressed their heartbreak. "Our hearts are with his family and loved ones during this devastating time," one post read.
Maland’s legacy of service and sacrifice will not be forgotten.
