Javeoin Gills, Whiting, Indiana

Whiting, Indiana – Javeoin Gills, a 19-year-old former football player from Merrillville High School, was tragically shot and killed early on Saturday, January 24, 2025.

The incident occurred near Calumet College of St. Joseph in Whiting, during a party in the early hours of the morning.

Hammond Police responded to the scene at approximately 3:30 a.m., following reports of gunfire in the 2300 block of New York Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered Gills’ lifeless body and another individual who had suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

The victim was later identified by the Lake County Coroner’s office as Javeoin Gills.

According to Lt. Steve Kellogg of the Hammond Police Department, Gills had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

The second person involved was taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment and is expected to recover.

The police investigation is ongoing, with authorities urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.

As of now, no suspects have been named in the case.

Memorial services and funeral arrangements for Javeoin Gills will be announced in the coming days.

He will be remembered as a talented young man with a promising future ahead.
