Point Pleasant, NJ – John Neary, known fondly as "Muskrat Jack," a dedicated animal control officer and founder of Muskrat Jack Animal Services, tragically passed away on January 12, 2025.
His passing has left the community in mourning, as he was a well-known and beloved figure in Point Pleasant and surrounding towns.
Neary’s career in animal control began at the young age of 12 when he first helped neighbors remove unwanted animals from attics, igniting his lifelong passion.
Over the years, Neary became a trusted name in animal control, working across towns like Point Pleasant Beach, Bay Head, and Mantoloking.
He earned the respect of his community for his fearless approach to animal control, handling everything from raccoons in attics to possums in basements with remarkable resilience and care.
“John wasn’t just an animal control officer—he was a lifeline for the community,” said a spokesperson from the Point Pleasant Police Department.
He was known for his warmth, humor, and his unwavering dedication to both wildlife and the people he served.
“Rest easy, Uncle John,” shared Jennifer Osborn, a family member. “Thank you for all the laughs and for instilling in us a love of wildlife and nature.”
John Neary’s legacy will continue through his animal control service, Muskrat Jack Animal Services, which will carry on his mission of humane treatment of wildlife.
He is survived by his family, friends, colleagues, and the countless people he helped during his decades of service.
