Cedar City, Utah – 17-year-old KayLee Dutton was tragically killed in a senseless drive-by shooting on January 17, 2025, leaving her family, friends, and the community heartbroken.
The incident occurred just before 10:45 p.m. when KayLee and a friend were traveling along Midvalley Road. According to authorities, a vehicle pulled up alongside theirs, and an unidentified individual began firing shots. KayLee, who was driving, was struck and lost control of the vehicle, which crashed through a fence.
Despite life-saving efforts from deputies and emergency personnel, KayLee was later pronounced dead at Cedar City Hospital.
Authorities arrested four suspects in connection with the incident. Michael Hess-Witucki has been charged with murder, and the investigation continues to uncover the motive behind the attack.
Iron County Sheriff Ken Carpenter described the shooting as a "senseless tragedy," expressing his sorrow for the young lives affected. "These two young ladies were just out enjoying themselves, and now one of them is gone," he said.
The Iron County School District also expressed their condolences, offering support to grieving students and staff.
KayLee is survived by her family and many friends, and her loss will be deeply felt by all who knew her.
