Belfast, Northern Ireland – Michael Newberry, a former footballer for Newcastle United and Linfield FC, tragically passed away on December 30, 2024, at the age of 27.
His death, ruled as a suicide, has left the football world in shock and mourning.
Newberry, who had recently joined Cliftonville FC during the summer of 2024, was found dead at his home from a self-inflicted injury.
The Northern Ireland Football League, as well as both Cliftonville and Linfield, have expressed deep condolences following the news.
Cliftonville FC released a statement, saying, “Our condolences are extended to Michael’s family and friends, as well as the many teammates he played with during his career.”
Linfield FC echoed these sentiments, stating, “Linfield FC is devastated to learn of the sudden passing of our former player, Michael Newberry. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.”
Newberry had a promising career, having represented Northern Ireland at the Under-21 level and playing for Icelandic side Vikingur Olafsvik in 2018.
He was regarded as one of Newcastle’s most promising prospects, winning the prestigious “Wor Jackie Trophy” in 2016.
The cause of death is under investigation, and Newberry’s passing has left a deep void in the football community.
