Stevie Ray Smith and Jennifer Lyn Bernhard, Northfield Township, Michigan

Northfield Township, Michigan – On January 1, 2025, Stevie Ray Smith, 74, and Jennifer Lyn Bernhard, 48, tragically lost their lives in a violent confrontation at a foster home in Northfield Township.

Authorities reported that the incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. when a shooting took place, resulting in the deaths of both adults.

The incident also involved the abduction of two children, aged 7 and 4, who were later rescued by law enforcement.

The children, not related by blood, were taken from the foster home located on Nollar Bend Drive. One child was found on Rowley Court, while the second was located near Lexington Parkway and Rambling Road.

The third person involved, Jeffrey Bernhard, the husband of Jennifer, was critically injured and is currently in stable condition at a nearby hospital.

He serves as an assistant director for the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System.

While authorities have not fully confirmed the motive, sources suggest the shooting may be linked to a child custody dispute.

The children have been confirmed safe and are in good health.

Neighbors expressed shock, with one remarking, “Just strange. You know, we don’t have those kinds of things happen here.”

Stevie Ray Smith and Jennifer Lyn Bernhard are remembered as devoted individuals whose lives were tragically cut short.
