Ward Gosse

Newfoundland and Labrador – Ward Gosse, a celebrated figure in both softball and hockey, tragically passed away on January 20, 2025.

His sudden death has left the sports community in mourning, as he was a beloved athlete known for his dedication and extraordinary talent.

Inducted into the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame in 2019, Gosse’s legacy in the province’s athletic history is undeniable.

A Bay Roberts native, he was introduced to softball at an early age, and his career flourished under the mentorship of fellow Hall of Fame member Langdon Critch.

Gosse was a key player in the St. John’s Senior League for 25 years, where he became an all-time leader in home runs and RBIs.

His career batting average of .323, along with 355 RBIs and a slugging percentage of .624, are a testament to his excellence on the field.

He also played for 15 provincial teams, earning gold in 2012 and multiple silver medals.

Gosse’s prowess extended to hockey, where he played for 17 years in the Senior A St. John’s Senior Hockey League, contributing to five Herder Memorial Championship victories.

He will be remembered for his sportsmanship, leadership, and exceptional skill.

Ward Gosse’s passing has deeply impacted Newfoundland and Labrador’s sports community, but his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of athletes.
