Abigail Blakey, Scunthorpe — The community is mourning the sudden and unexpected loss of Abigail Blakey, who passed away on July 5, 2024. She was a beloved mother and friend, remembered for her resilience and caring nature.
Abigail’s son, Nik Blakey, along with his two younger sisters, are deeply affected by her sudden passing. Abigail had been suffering from abdominal pains since May 2024. Despite multiple visits to the hospital, her condition was initially misdiagnosed as constipation and later as a cracked rib. It wasn’t until July 3, when she fell at home and was admitted to the hospital, that she was diagnosed with advanced bowel cancer that had spread to her liver and lungs. Her condition deteriorated rapidly, and she passed away in a hospice on July 5, while her family held her hand.
A fundraiser organized by Nik Blakey has been launched to help cover the funeral expenses, which amount to nearly £5,000. So far, £320 has been raised from 10 donations, with contributions from generous donors like Karen Brockett and Joanna Lee.
The community has expressed their condolences and support through touching Facebook posts. Hettie Louise Derrick shared, "My beautiful best friend’s mum died suddenly and completely unexpectedly on Friday. They now have to pay just shy of 5k and need a deposit to be able to lay their angel to rest! If anyone can help, even just a share, please do. It’s hugely appreciated."
Nik Blakey is asking for help to lay his mother to rest, as the family does not have the financial means to cover the funeral costs. "It’s a sad time when you’re too poor to die," he wrote. "Please help me; I don’t know how I’d ever say thank you or repay anyone that helps, but I’d be forever grateful."
