Al Hadden, Jasper—The beloved community member Al Hadden has tragically passed away. The Jasper community is reeling from the loss, particularly as it coincides with the recent devastating wildfires that ravaged the area.
Al Hadden and his partner Laura Coulson were on their annual summer vacation when they received news that wildfires were threatening their home. On July 24th, the fires tore through Jasper, destroying homes and businesses. Al and Laura lost their home and all their belongings. The couple had built a life in Jasper since moving there in 2013, deeply embedding themselves in the community.
During their trip, Al also learned that his grandmother was in critical condition. As they rushed to Vancouver Island to be with her, they were informed that their home had been destroyed. Tragically, Al’s grandmother passed away the day after they received the devastating news about their home.
Al and Laura’s home, affectionately known as ‘The Bird’s Hollow,’ was not only their sanctuary but also a source of income through their Airbnb business. Additionally, Laura’s wedding planning businesses and Al’s position with CN Rail were integral to their livelihood. The wildfire has left them without their primary sources of income, and they are now staying with friends in Al’s late grandmother’s home.
To aid Al and Laura during this incredibly challenging time, Sherwood Coulson, Laura’s brother, has organized a fundraiser. The campaign has raised $10,686 CAD out of a $30,000 goal, with contributions from 77 donors. The fundraiser aims to provide immediate assistance for necessities like food and clothing as they begin the long process of rebuilding their lives.
Laura Coulson expressed her heartbreak and hope: “Al and I built our home in Jasper over the last 9.5 years in a community unlike any other. The loss that our town and community are experiencing is unfathomable. As the smoke clears and we receive the news that Jasper still stands, we have hope. Hope that there is something to go back to, a place to rebuild our home and our businesses. Together, we will rebuild.”
The Jasper community has rallied around Al and Laura, offering support and donations. Top donors include DKB Medical Inc. with $2,500 and Kendria Coulson with the first donation of $100. Erin Steeves made a recent donation of $50, highlighting the ongoing support from friends, family, and community members.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Al Hadden and Laura Coulson during this difficult time. May they find strength in their community and the love they shared.
