Amanda Mary Thwaits, Plattsburgh, NY—The Plattsburgh community and her loved ones are mourning the loss of Amanda Mary Thwaits, who passed away on September 3, 2024, after a brave battle with breast cancer. Mary, as she was fondly known, was born on August 9, 1987, to Reginald Thwaits and Debbie Papier. She was 37 years old at the time of her passing.
Mary was a graduate of SUNY Plattsburgh, where she earned Bachelor’s degrees in Business & Business Economics, as well as Marketing & Entrepreneurship. She was also a beloved member of the Alpha Epsilon Phi sorority, Phi Tau Chapter. Known for her boundless compassion, loyalty, and infectious positivity, Mary touched the lives of everyone she met. As her mother Debbie shared, "She never met a stranger."
In her memory, Rebecca Turbeville, on behalf of Mary’s family, friends, and sorority sisters, has organized a fundraiser to plant a memorial tree and plaque on the SUNY Plattsburgh campus. The goal is to raise $1,500 to cover the cost of the tree and a 5 x 5 cast bronze plaque that will bear Mary’s name, sorority affiliation, and the title “breast cancer warrior,” as requested by her family. Any funds exceeding this amount will be donated to the Susan G. Komen organization in Mary’s honor.
So far, the fundraiser has raised $560 through eight generous donations. Contributors include Amanda Shaffer, who donated $100, and Kalen Straight, who gave $250. The Plattsburgh community is coming together to ensure that Mary’s legacy of strength and resilience is honored.
Mary’s passing is a profound loss for her family, friends, and the Plattsburgh community. She will always be remembered for her radiant spirit and the joy she brought to those around her.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Amanda Mary Thwaits’ family and friends during this difficult time.
