Ana Rita Velez, Los Angeles, CA—Ana Rita Velez, a cherished mother, grandmother, and retired officer from the Los Angeles Police Department, passed away recently. Ana, born in Queens, New York on November 22, 1966, spent much of her life devoted to her family, community, and career.
Raised in New York before moving to Hollywood with her mother and stepfather, Ana began her distinguished career with the LAPD in 1988 at the Northeast Division. Over the years, she worked in multiple divisions, including Devonshire, Mission, and Foothill, before retiring from Foothill Division in 2020. Her dedication to public service was well-known, and she built a strong legacy within the LAPD community.
Beyond her professional life, Ana was a proud mother to Tatiana Gonzalez and Christian Velez. She was actively involved in their after-school activities, including soccer, track and field, water polo, swimming, and football. Ana was not just a spectator; she embraced physical challenges herself, running marathons like the LA Marathon and Baker to Vegas, and hiking Griffith Park, always pushing herself to complete every race.
Ana was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008, a battle she fought and won. However, in 2021, she faced another diagnosis and fought bravely but lost the battle after a short time. Despite this, her love for life never dimmed. Her passion for family time, dancing, and her Latin roots, where she enjoyed salsa and cumbias, remained strong. Ana cherished every moment spent with her family, especially with her grandchild Noah Gonzalez.
Tatiana Gonzalez, Ana’s daughter, has organized a fundraiser to help with memorial expenses, expressing her deep love and gratitude for her mother through touching words: "To my mother in heaven, thank you for always loving me and guiding me. Even though you are no longer here with me, I can still feel your love guiding me. You are always in my heart. I love you and miss you dearly."
Ana is survived by her daughter Tatiana, her beloved mother Sonia, her sister Elizabeth, her grandchild Noah, and a host of family, friends, and LAPD colleagues. She will forever be remembered for her strength, love, and dedication to those around her.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Ana’s family during this difficult time. May she rest in peace, and may her family find comfort in the loving memories she left behind.
