Andrew Andy Penn, A Life Remembered at RAF Biggin Hill

Andrew "Andy" Penn—Andrew Penn, affectionately known as Andy in flying circles, passed away recently. The community and his loved ones are mourning this significant loss. Andrew had a deep passion for aviation, and his connection with the RAF Biggin Hill spanned many years, beginning from his time with the 2427 Squadron of the ATC at just fifteen.

In memory of Andrew, his family, led by his daughter Alix Penn, has organized a fundraiser to establish a memorial bench overlooking the runway at RAF Biggin Hill. This bench will serve as a place for friends and family to honor and remember him. Alix shared on Facebook, "As some of you may know, my dad died unexpectedly last month. We’d like to commemorate his life with a memorial bench at RAF Biggin Hill, a place that meant a lot to him."

The fundraiser, created on August 4th, 2024, has so far raised £850 of its £1,000 goal, with contributions from eighteen generous donors. The top donation of £200 was made by James Whittaker, and Marianne Carew contributed £50. Anonymous donors have also shown their support, with the first donation being £10.

Andrew’s life at Biggin Hill was filled with cherished moments, including the christenings of his two sons, Richard and Christopher, and his marriage to Jo in 1998. More recently, he enjoyed spending time at the Nightingale Café, chatting with friends from the Falcon Flying Club when they couldn’t fly their remote control model aeroplanes.

The community has expressed their condolences and shared memories on Facebook. Mélanie Dangereuse de Clegane wrote, "Oh no, I’m so so sorry xxx," while Ellen Weineck added, "Sorry for your loss Alix xx." Elizabeth Brown commented, "What a lovely way to remember your Dad," and Mia Balivo extended her deepest condolences to Alix and her family. Owen Gardner remarked, "Sorry to hear Alix but what a great place for a memorial bench."

Andrew’s wish was for a direct cremation with no flowers or fuss. The family plans to use the funds raised for the purchase, personalization, and installation of the bench. Any excess funds will be donated to the RAF Biggin Hill Museum & Chapel and the UK Sepsis Trust if the goal surpasses £1,000.
