Anthony James Reyes, Portland, OR— The community mourns the loss of Anthony James Reyes, who passed away on July 5th at the age of 58. Known affectionately as Tony or “The Dude,” he brought light and warmth to everyone he met, with an infectious smile and open heart that touched countless lives. His passing leaves a significant void for those who knew and loved him.
Tony was a dedicated fighter, both in his personal life and through his varied careers. As a U.S. Army Sergeant, he played a role in the demolition of the Berlin Wall, leaving a lasting impact on history. He was also known for his adventurous spirit, competing in Texas rodeos as a bull rider and working as a power lineman. Tony’s heart extended to those who needed support, often standing up for the underdog and providing love and care to the LGBTQIA+ community, where he embraced his role as a proud father figure. His presence was felt at the Portland Pride Festival, where he joyfully celebrated Father’s Day with many.
Tony’s strength and resilience were remarkable, especially in his final days. Despite a grim prognosis, he surpassed doctors’ expectations and fought for 93 additional days, including 21 days without food or water. His unwavering will to stay with his loved ones left an indelible mark on all who witnessed his courage.
During this challenging time, Tony’s daughter, Brittania Reyes, stood by his side, providing care and comfort, ensuring he was never alone. Unfortunately, the emotional toll was compounded by financial struggles, as Tony’s passing came without a will or life insurance, leaving Brittania and her family to bear the unexpected burden of funeral and memorial expenses. A fundraiser, organized by Brianna Burgy, is seeking support to help the family with these costs, and any donations, no matter the size, are deeply appreciated.
We remember Tony’s love, strength, and humor, and his legacy will continue to shine through the lives he touched. Our hearts go out to his family, and we hold them in our thoughts and prayers during this time of grief.
We pray for peace and comfort for the Reyes family and for Tony’s soul to rest in eternal light.
