Ayelech Desta, Bakersfield, CA—It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ayelech Desta, a cherished mother and grandmother, who passed away on October 5, 2024. Ayelech had traveled from Ethiopia to Bakersfield, California, to celebrate her grandson Andualem Yohannes’ graduation. Tragically, as the family was preparing for this joyous event, Ayelech suffered a stroke and was unable to recover, despite receiving the best medical care and the support of her family.
Ayelech was deeply loved by her family, including her only son, Yohannes Shiferaw, who, along with his wife Mulumebet Tadesse, is currently receiving care for dementia at a skilled nursing home. Due to these challenging circumstances, it has been decided that Ayelech will be buried locally in Bakersfield, as sending her body back to Ethiopia is not possible.
The Ethiopian community, along with her grandsons—Getaneh, Andualem, and Melaku—are seeking help from the public to cover funeral and burial expenses. A fundraiser organized by Nigatu Workneh has been set up, and kind donations are already coming in, with Dagna Kidane generously contributing $500.
The family and community are heartbroken by this loss and ask for support during these difficult times. Any contributions are greatly appreciated as they work to give Ayelech Desta the dignified farewell she deserves.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Desta and Shiferaw families during this time of sorrow.
