Bertha Mendoza, 56, of Erwin, TN, passed away following the tragic Nolichucky River flood. Bertha, a beloved wife, mother, sister, daughter, and grandmother, was dearly loved by her family, church, community, and co-workers. She was swept away by the strong current during the flood, and despite desperate efforts to stay afloat, she was separated from her sister. Bertha was last seen on September 27, 2024, and tragically, her body was found and identified two days later, on September 29, 2024.
Her family, especially her widowed husband, is now facing the difficult task of arranging her funeral. A GoFundMe has been organized by Estrella Mendoza to help with funeral expenses, and the community has already begun showing their support. Generous donations have been made, including $200 from Elvia Elisa Fuentes Chavez and $100 from both Owen Roberts and Roberta Nielsen. The family has expressed their deep gratitude for all contributions and continues to ask for prayers during this difficult time.
The community has also taken to social media to share their thoughts and prayers for the family. Mishel Thomas shared a heartfelt message on Facebook, mentioning how their congregation at 24/7 Church in Kodak, TN, prayed hard for Bertha’s family, hoping for her safe return. Mishel also encouraged others to donate to the GoFundMe campaign to help lay Bertha to rest properly.
Our hearts go out to the Mendoza family during this tragic loss. May Bertha’s memory live on through the love and kindness she brought to everyone she knew. We pray for strength and comfort for her family as they navigate this unimaginable loss.
