Bill Ben Nickel, Grinnell, IA— Bill Ben Nickel passed away peacefully at home on September 10, 2024, surrounded by his family. He was 76 years old. Bill, who was born on September 2, 1948, in Carroll, IA, was known for his remarkable courage and resilience. His battle with cancer was marked by an unwavering determination that reflected his strength throughout his life.

Bill’s early years were spent on the family farm in Guthrie Center, IA. He graduated from high school in 1967 and moved to Des Moines, IA, where he worked for Meredith Corporation. His service to his country began on November 25, 1968, when he was drafted into the Army. Bill served in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970 and was honorably discharged on June 29, 1970.

In recognition of his service, Bill participated in the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight 50 on May 1, 2024, which provided veterans the opportunity to visit Washington, D.C., and honor their contributions.

To commemorate Bill’s legacy, his family has established a fundraiser to sponsor an Honor Flight for military veterans in his memory. The goal is to raise $50,000, with donations currently being accepted through the GoFundMe platform organized by Casey Nickel.
