Chad Odonnell, Denham Springs Community Mourns Loss of Beloved Navy Veteran

Chad Odonnell, a resident of Denham Springs, has passed away, leaving his community and loved ones in deep mourning. Chad was known for his dedication to his family, his service in the United States Navy, and his strength in the face of adversity. He passed away on Thursday, September 26, 2024, in a tragic incident while changing a tire on Magnolia Bridge Rd. & Greenwell Springs Rd.

Chad, 46, was on his way to a follow-up medical appointment when his tire went flat. He had safely parked his vehicle well off the shoulder, as he had always taught his children to do in such situations. While retrieving a jack from the trunk, a driver heading west on Magnolia Bridge Rd. veered off the road and onto the shoulder, striking Chad. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but he passed away at the scene.

Gretchen Darone, a lifelong friend who shared a deep bond with Chad, expressed her grief, recalling the long journey they had together. “He was my best friend,” she said. “We saw each other every day, stayed close, even when life got hard. I don’t know how we’ll get through this.”

Chad’s battle with cancer five years ago had already tested his resilience. Diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer and given only a year to live, Chad fought bravely and, against all odds, his cancer went into remission. Just a day before the incident, he had been working on his car with his youngest son, demonstrating the bond he shared with his children.

Friends and community members have shared their memories and condolences on social media. Christy Crouse wrote, “My daughter and Chad Odonnell’s niece Miranda Kellem will be putting together a picture video. If anyone has pictures, please send them to me or her.” Miranda Kellem also reached out, asking for pictures of her uncle, reflecting the love and care the community feels for Chad.

Nena Brisco added, “Praying for you Christy Crouse and BJ and the rest of his family and friends. Chad was very respectful and it was heartbreaking to hear that. Prayers going up for peace and comfort for everyone.”

A fundraiser organized by Gretchen Darone, “Help Cherish Chad’s Memory for His Children,” aims to support his family during this difficult time. As of now, the campaign is seeking its first contributions.
