Dakota ThuyVy Lam, a recent graduate of FVHS in Huntington Beach, CA, has passed away, leaving her family, friends, and community in deep sorrow. Dakota, who had recently been accepted to UCLA with plans to try out for the university’s Women’s Golf Team, experienced a brain hemorrhage and was declared brain-dead on October 20, 2024. In a decision marked by heartbreak yet profound generosity, her parents, Nghia Lam and Kim Nguyen, chose to honor their daughter’s wishes by donating her organs to help save the lives of others.
Dakota’s passing comes after a courageous battle with ITP, an autoimmune disease that required her to receive multiple blood transfusions. Dakota’s bravery in facing this illness while excelling academically and in golf became a source of inspiration to those who knew her. She was known for her kind-heartedness, warm spirit, and dedication to helping others, embodying a generous soul and an exceptional student-athlete.
In honor of her memory, Dakota’s family has established a scholarship fund at FVHS to support students who, like Dakota, exhibit both academic excellence and resilience in their pursuits. Organized by Hieu Lam, this fundraiser aims to support future scholars who will carry Dakota’s legacy forward.
Many have already shown their support through the fundraiser, including donations from family friends and community members like Susan Nguyen, Allan Liu, and Hieu Nguyen. The funeral service for Dakota is planned for November 2, 2024, at Heritage-Dilday Funeral Home in Huntington Beach. Those wishing to contribute to the scholarship fund in lieu of flowers are encouraged to do so as a way of honoring Dakota’s inspiring life.
We extend our heartfelt prayers to Dakota’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.
