David Ray Smallwood Sr., Hemphill, TX—The Hemphill community is mourning the loss of David Ray Smallwood Sr., who passed away on Thursday, August 8th, 2024, at Sabine County Hospital in Hemphill. At 56, David was a beloved husband, father, and friend whose vibrant personality touched the lives of everyone who knew him.
David was a man who truly embraced life, finding joy in the outdoors through his love for hunting, fishing, and spending time on his boat. His passion for life extended beyond his hobbies, as he was known for his infectious energy and warm personality. David’s ability to make everyone around him feel welcomed and cherished will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
An active member of the Six Mile Volunteer Firefighter team, David dedicated his time and energy to serving his community. His commitment to helping others also extended to his work as a tow truck operator, where he was known for saving lives and making a difference in the lives of those he served.
David is survived by his loving wife, Kim Smallwood, and his children, David Smallwood Jr. and wife Rebecca, Bonnie Rosas and husband Enrique, and Ciara Smallwood and her significant other, Justin McGaha. His mother, Frances Freeman, and his siblings, Donna Shute and husband Glen, Colleen Simmons and husband Scott, Rachel Freeman, Shirley Smith, Clay Smallwood, and Tommy Smallwood, will carry his memory with them. Additionally, David is survived by his mother-in-law, Kay Hall, brother-in-law Thomas Hall, sister-in-law Renee Dickerson and her husband Cody, as well as his seven grandchildren, and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends who all held a special place in his heart.
The community has shown an outpouring of support on social media, with touching messages posted in David’s memory. Katlin Sauseda expressed her grief, saying, "Please pray for my childhood best friend’s family! You will truly be missed, Mr. David. All the good times growing up and burning those roads bumping those speakers! I’m sure you’re lovin’ seeing all those pitties you had."
A fundraiser has been organized by Nicole Herrera Mahoney to support David’s family during this difficult time. As of now, $100 has been raised out of the $8,000 goal. Dustin Dickerson, who donated $50, and Nicole Herrera Mahoney, who also contributed $50, have been early supporters of this effort.
