Deirdre Staunton, Strandhill—Community Rallies in Memory of Dedicated Advocate

Deirdre Staunton—The Strandhill community mourns the loss of Deirdre Staunton, who passed away in November 2023 after a courageous two and a half year battle with lung cancer. Deirdre was known not only for her strength and resilience but also for her tireless advocacy for the Irish Lung Cancer Community (ILCC). During her illness, she became a vocal supporter of the ILCC, dedicating herself to providing better resources and support for others affected by the disease.

Deirdre’s contributions to the ILCC were substantial, including her role in launching a much-needed website for the community, which became a beacon of hope and information for many. It was a project close to her heart, and poignantly, the website was launched just a week before her passing.

In honor of Deirdre’s memory, her daughter, Meadhbh Donaghy, has organized a fundraiser, with all proceeds going to the ILCC. To date, €135 has been raised out of a €1,000 goal, with six donations received. The fundraiser coincides with the annual Warriors run in Strandhill on the 24th of August, where Deirdre’s family, neighbors, and friends will participate, walking and running in her memory.

Deirdre was passionate about this event, often participating herself, and her loved ones believe this is a fitting tribute to the woman who gave so much to her community, even in the face of her own challenges.
