Don Baskerville, Eastbourne — The community is mourning the loss of Don Baskerville, who passed away recently. Don was diagnosed two years ago with Pleural Mesothelioma, a cancer caused by working with asbestos over 60 years ago. He exceeded all medical expectations, living 18 months beyond his initial prognosis.
His daughter, Christy Baskerville-Olivier, has organized a fundraiser in his memory to benefit St Wilfrid’s Hospice in Eastbourne. This hospice played a crucial role in ensuring Don’s greatest wish of remaining at home until the end was fulfilled, providing constant support to both him and his family.
The fundraiser has so far raised £160 out of a £200 goal, with contributions from four generous donors. Cailen Birtles donated £100, while Anonymous, Angela Curry, and Frances Smith each contributed £20.
Don’s resilience and sense of humor remained unwavering despite his inability to walk and his rare excursions outside his home during the last year of his life. The funds raised will support St Wilfrid’s Hospice, which relies on donations to deliver care through a team of dedicated professionals, including consultants in palliative medicine, specialist nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, counsellors, and social workers.
The community has expressed their condolences and support through generous donations, helping to ensure that the hospice can continue its mission of providing compassionate end-of-life care.
