Donald Short, Manchester, KY— The community is deeply saddened by the passing of Donald Short, who tragically passed away on Christmas evening, December 25, 2024. Donald, along with his cousin Jonathan Hoskins, was working at an abandoned coal mine in Southeastern Kentucky when the mine collapsed, leading to their untimely deaths.
Donald and Jonathan, who had been inseparable since childhood, were known for their adventurous spirit and close-knit family ties. They had ventured into the mountains to dig for coal, a vital resource for heating homes during the cold winter months. Unfortunately, the mine collapsed, and both men were overcome by mud and rocks. Despite efforts from Donald’s brother, Richard, to rescue them, it was clear that they had tragically passed away in the incident.
The loss has left a void in the hearts of their family, particularly their mothers, who are now faced with the heartbreaking task of laying their sons to rest. Donald’s family is working to cover the funeral costs, as the men did not have life insurance. A fundraiser organized by Brianna Hunter is underway to help provide a dignified burial for Donald and Jonathan. The community is rallying to support the family during this painful time, with donations pouring in to help with the funeral expenses.
Donald and Jonathan will be laid to rest together in a joint funeral service on Friday, January 3, 2025, in Manchester, KY. Family and friends will gather at Brown Mission Church on Thursday evening for a time of mourning and remembrance, honoring the legacy of these two beloved individuals.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Donald’s family and all who loved him. May they find comfort during this incredibly difficult time.
