Matthew, born on August 2, 1995, was a bright and accomplished individual. He graduated from the University of Toronto with a medical degree and had begun his residency in Anaesthesia. He was known not only for his professional dedication but also for his compassionate nature and his passion for helping others. His commitment to his patients and his community earned him the prestigious Golden Stethoscope Award.
Throughout his life, Matthew faced significant challenges, including a courageous battle with cancer. Despite his illness, he remained resolute in his determination to live life to the fullest. He was an inspiration to all who knew him, never allowing his cancer to define him or limit his dreams.
Matthew’s family, including his loving wife Jessica Nelms, parents Dr. Maggie Rebel and David Nelms, siblings Aiden (and wife Hayley Larkin), Maria, and Brenden, and his grandmothers Ina Nelms and Betsy Rebel, provided him with unwavering support and comfort throughout his journey. His grandfathers, Willem Rebel and Vernon Nelms, predeceased him.
In honor of Matthew’s legacy, his wife Jessica has organized a fundraiser to launch The Matthew Nelms Foundation. This foundation will support young adults suffering from cancer, helping them to chase their dreams despite their hardships. The foundation also aims to increase awareness of rising colon cancer rates among young adults and will support research and create a yearly scholarship in Matthew’s name.
The community has already begun to show their support for this cause, with two anonymous donors contributing a total of $350 towards the $500,000 goal. The fundraiser reflects the spirit of Matthew’s resilience, determination, and commitment to living life fully.
Matthew’s visitation is scheduled for August 7, 2024, and his funeral will be held on August 8, 2024, in London, ON.
