Ellen Martin—known affectionately as Ellie to her friends—passed away on September 8, 2023, after a brave battle with cancer. Her passing, just seven months after her diagnosis, left a profound impact on the Lancaster community. Ellie, a bright and accomplished individual, was a beacon of kindness and grace throughout her life.
A 2015 graduate of Hempfield High School, Ellie excelled in her academics and extracurricular activities. She served as Vice President of the National Honor Society, was a National Merit Finalist, and participated as a member of the varsity swim team. After graduating as Salutatorian, Ellie attended the University of Pittsburgh, where she majored in Bioengineering and was recognized as the Outstanding Biomechanical Student of the Year.
After completing her studies in 2019, Ellie returned to Lancaster and began her career as a Risk Control Specialist for CNA Insurance. She continued to be a beloved daughter, friend, and community member, remembered for her poise, wit, and courageous spirit.
In honor of the first anniversary of her passing, a fundraiser has been organized by Beth Cioffi to raise $1,100 for a memorial bench to be placed outside Hempfield High School. This bench, dedicated to Ellie, will offer a place of rest and reflection for future generations of students, continuing Ellie’s legacy of compassion and generosity. As of today, $475 has been raised from eight donations, with contributors like Megan Connell and Madyson Popalis among those showing their support.
The funds raised beyond the cost of the bench will benefit the Sarcoma Foundation of America and Ellie’s parents, Tom and Laurie. If sufficient funds are raised, a scholarship in Ellie’s name may also be established at Hempfield High School, supporting talented young women in their pursuit of higher education.
