Everett McBee, Harrison County, KY—The McBee family is on a heartfelt mission to honor the memory of Everett McBee, affectionately known as "Buddy" to those who loved him. Buddy made the ultimate sacrifice in September 1944 during the liberation of Europe in World War II, and his family has long held onto the dream of visiting his final resting place in Normandy, France.
Buddy, who was born and raised in Harrison County, Kentucky, served in the 81st Tank Battalion, Company A, 5th Armored "Victory" Division. He landed on Utah Beach in July 1944 and bravely fought with his comrades through Normandy, Le Mans, Paris, and ultimately to the Oise region. Tragically, upon entering the city of Noyon, his tank was struck by a Panzerfaust round, and Buddy, along with his crew, was gunned down by German infantry soldiers as they evacuated their tank.
For nearly 80 years, Buddy’s family has cherished his casket flag, purple heart, and last letters home, but they have never had the opportunity to visit his gravesite at the American Cemetery in Normandy. This year, on the 80th anniversary of his passing, they hope to finally make the journey to honor him and his fallen comrades at a commemoration service in Noyon, where they gave their lives for freedom.
Steve Price, Buddy’s nephew, has organized a fundraiser to help cover the travel costs for this important pilgrimage. The family has been saving diligently, but rising costs have made it difficult to reach their goal. The fundraiser, which has set a target of $4,600, is currently seeking its first supporters.
The McBee family is grateful for any assistance that will help them fulfill their dream of paying tribute to Buddy and his comrades, Sgt. Alan Reid, T/4 Bernard Adams, Pvt. Kearney Dunn, and Pvt. Melvin Cross, at the ceremony in Noyon.
The community’s support is crucial in helping them carry the gratitude of everyone who remembers Buddy’s sacrifice to his final resting place. As they prepare for this meaningful journey, they echo the words of General Pershing, "Time shall not dim the glory of their deeds."
We extend our deepest prayers and condolences to the McBee family as they honor the memory of Everett "Buddy" McBee and his comrades.
