Gail Catherine Pelletier, Winnipeg, MB— Gail Catherine Pelletier, a beloved mother, grandmother, and respected leader, passed away peacefully at 3:20 AM on November 6, 2024, surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and siblings. She was 64 years old.
Born on March 6, 1960, in Treaty 5 territory, The Pas, Manitoba, Gail was known for her profound influence in the Indigenous community. She was a passionate advocate for mental health, especially within the context of forensic psychology, and dedicated much of her life to helping Indigenous women in prisons. A member of the Pukatawagan Cree Nation Clan, Gail became a cherished matriarch who led with love, strength, and resilience.
Gail’s early life was marked by hardship, including the trauma of being taken by the RCMP at the age of five and attending Indian Residential Schools. Despite these challenges, she remained a beacon of love and unity for her family, always encouraging healing, peace, and decolonization.
Her final wish was to return to the land she held so dear, where she planned to pick berries and be laid to rest beside her own mother, Pelegie Anderson, in the sacred family cemetery near the Churchill River. This journey is a long and costly one, and her family has launched a fundraiser to cover the expenses for her burial and the travel needed for her extended family to honor her legacy.
Gail’s passing has left a deep void in the hearts of those who knew her. Her strength and dedication to her community will continue to inspire generations to come.
We send our heartfelt condolences to the Pelletier family during this difficult time. May they find peace and comfort in knowing that Gail’s legacy will live on through them.
Prayer for the Deceased and Family
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Pelletier family as they navigate this difficult time. May Gail Catherine Pelletier rest in peace, and may her family be surrounded by love, strength, and support in the days ahead.
