Ida Pietromonaco, New Hyde Park, NY—The New Hyde Park community is mourning the loss of Ida Lattanzio Pietromonaco, who passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, August 10th, 2024. Born on September 14, 1937, in the quaint village of Salle in the Abruzzo region of Italy, Ida’s life was marked by deep connections with her family, her faith, and the people she cherished.
Ida spent her early years in Salle, Italy, where she was raised by her devoted parents, Rinaldo Lattanzio and Maria Fonzo, alongside her brother Armando. Her upbringing in a close-knit community laid the foundation for the lifelong relationships she maintained with her childhood friends.
Ida’s life took a romantic turn when Domenico Pietromonaco, an Italian immigrant and co-worker of her father, saw her photo and declared his intent to marry her. True to his word, they were wed in 1959 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish and later settled in New Hyde Park in 1988. Ida balanced her roles as a seamstress, wife, and mother, eventually working as a school lunch aide in the NYC public school system.
She is survived by her son Michael and his wife Sylvana, her daughter Mary and her husband Gerry, and her beloved grandchildren Domenico, Luke, Cristina, and Mika. Ida was a devoted mother and grandmother, traveling the world to be with her family, including trips to Tokyo, Paris, Saipan, Vietnam, and London.
Ida’s strong faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she was an active member of Notre Dame Catholic Church in New Hyde Park. She was known for her unwavering love, dedication, and the joy she brought to everyone around her. Ida’s family remembers her for always looking on the bright side and thanking God every day for her blessings.
The community has shown an outpouring of support on social media. Gerry Spahn shared a touching tribute, stating, "She was one of a kind and we will all miss her, but we’re better off for having known her." Other heartfelt messages include those from Tina Agatha, who lovingly recalled the handmade Christmas ornaments Ida created, and Chris Ford, who sent prayers to Mary and the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to a fundraiser organized by Mary Spahn to restore Ida’s beloved hometown church, Chiesa di San Salvatore, in Salle, Italy. So far, $620 has been raised out of the $3,000 goal, with contributions from friends and family, including a generous donation of $300 from Carmine Iadevaia.
We are deeply saddened by the passing of Ida Pietromonaco. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family during this difficult time. May her memory be a blessing to all who knew her.
