Ira Quincy Hickman, age 53, passed away on Friday, July 26, 2024. Known for his deep love for his children, Vincent and Lily Hickman of Austin, TX, Ira cherished his role as a father above all else. He was proud to be a lineman, a profession he passionately advocated for, despite his fear of heights. His adventurous spirit led him to travel the world working on lines, often dangling from helicopters and buckets. One of his dreams was to work in Antarctica, and those who knew him hope he’s now fulfilling that dream.
Ira’s life was filled with colorful stories, both real and embellished. He was known for his humor, often taking jokes as well as he delivered them. His playful nature was evident in his excitement over winning an "Olympic medal" in golfing across a highway in Alcalde, a story that showcased his ability to find joy in the simplest of activities.
Born to Pearl and Joey Hickman, Ira grew up in Alcalde, NM. He is survived by his children, his siblings Jerry (Alice) Ball, Timothy (Leslie) Hickman, Margie (Mike) O’Neill, Adam Hickman, Jolene Herring, Julie (Mike) Hickman, Donna (Glenn) Williams, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his mother, Pearl Reid, and siblings Randy, Suzy, and Carlton Hickman.
Ira’s obituary reflects his unique character and the legacy he leaves behind. Friends and family have shared their memories and condolences on Facebook. Steven Padilla remembered Ira’s humor, saying, "I was going to use the cares button but then I heard Ira’s voice make fun of me for doing it so I hit like instead." Aaron Salinas added, "He was a ball buster!" Adrian Martinez shared, "I think he’d approve of this obituary. Still hard to believe. We will miss you, Ira Hickman."
A fundraiser organized by Donna White on behalf of Marjorie ONeill has been set up to help honor Ira. So far, $550 has been raised towards the $4,500 goal. Donations have come from kind individuals such as Juliana Casaus, Camille Vigil, Loreyna Ojeda, Aimee Guillen, and SocorroLucia Salazar.
Services for Ira will be held in Albuquerque at Trujillo’s Family Funeral Home on August 10th, from 1 pm to 3 pm, with a celebration of life to follow at the O’Neill residence from 4 pm to 8 pm.
