James Piland served in the Army’s 36th Texas Battalion, 142nd Infantry as a recon scout, earning accolades such as the Purple Heart, American Defense Service Medal, and EAME Campaign Medal with 5 Bronze Stars, along with a Bronze Indian Arrowhead.
James Piland passed away in June 1993, though, tragically, his death went largely unnoticed by his stepdaughter Lena Taylor, due to a lack of communication after he was placed in an assisted living facility. His remains were interred in an unmarked grave in Wrightsboro, Texas, where he has rested without recognition for over three decades.
Recently, Lena Taylor, now 80 years old and living in Arkansas, discovered the unmarked state of her stepfather’s grave. She has since ordered a military marker to honor his service. However, the placement of the marker comes with a financial cost of $1,800. Lena is seeking support to cover these expenses and additional costs for lodging and travel for an Honor Ceremony planned for November 9th in Wrightsboro.
As of now, no donations have been made, but Lena remains hopeful that the kindness of strangers will help her honor the memory of James Piland, who served his country bravely and deserves a proper resting place.
