John Edward Bruce, Yonkers, NY— The community is mourning the loss of John Edward Bruce, an influential historian, journalist, writer, and orator. Known affectionately by his pen name "Bruce Grit," Bruce passed away on August 7, 1924. He was a prominent figure in the Pan African nationalist movement and a member of Marcus Garvey’s Universal Negro Improvement Association.
John Edward Bruce was born into slavery on February 22, 1856, in Piscataway, Maryland, to Robert and Martha Allen (Clark) Bruce. Despite his early hardships, he self-educated and embarked on a prolific career in journalism and historical research. Bruce founded several publications, including the Argus weekly in Washington, D.C., the Sunday Item, the Republican in Norfolk, Virginia, and the Yonkers Weekly Standard. He also served as the associate editor and business manager of the Baltimore Commonwealth.
Bruce’s dedication to improving socio-economic conditions for disadvantaged communities was evident in his co-founding of the Negro Society for Historical Research in Yonkers with Arthur Schomburg. His work extended internationally as he contributed to the African Times and Orient Review in London.
Despite his achievements, Bruce faced financial challenges throughout his life, often supplementing his income with work at the Port of New York Authority. After retiring in 1922, he lived on a modest pension until his death at Bellevue Hospital in New York City. His passing was marked by an impressive state funeral at the UNIA Liberty Hall, attended by over 5,000 people.
Currently, a fundraiser organized by Harold Mckoy aims to raise $6,000 to place a headstone on Bruce’s unmarked grave in Oakland Cemetery, Yonkers. As of now, $60 has been raised from two donations. Harold Mckoy contributed $50, and Eliana Reynoso donated $10.
John Edward Bruce’s legacy as a dedicated advocate for African American history and socio-economic empowerment lives on. The Yonkers community and beyond remember his contributions and continue to honor his memory.
We are deeply saddened by the passing of John Edward Bruce. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time.
