John Koa Kolomona Kaukeouli Borge, lovingly known as Koa, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, August 18, 2024. Born on April 20, 1971, in Honolulu, Koa lived a life marked by love, strength, and humility, leaving behind a legacy cherished by his family and community.
Koa’s journey began in Honolulu as the son of Suelyn Lee Kalua and Patrick James Borge, with a deep bond with his bonus dad, Jerry Kalua. He was a devoted brother to Kanoe Bender, Joanna Ines, Janel Dumlao, Jocelyn Borge Perreira, Jason Borge, and Patrick James Borge Jr. Koa was preceded in death by his brother, Jarvis Borge.
Koa met the love of his life, Haroldine, in 1993, and their connection was instant and enduring. Their love story culminated in marriage on October 4, 2019, and they built a life full of cherished memories together. Koa was a proud father to Barrett Allan Matthew Kawika Fevella, Kila Kupono James Borge, and Kilo Jacob Konapiliahi Fevella-Borge. His grandchildren, Tori Kai-Mahina Fevella, Thea-Lei Napuawehilani Fevella, Tara Kealuanahea Fevella, Taze Koa Kamakahiki Fevella, Mila Grace Pualei Borge, Elia Jane Pomaika’i Borge, and Rush Kolomona Borge, were the light of his life.
Koa was known for his expertise in fishing and his deep connection to the ocean. He was a man of peace, always striving to avoid conflict, and his strong, loving, and caring nature left a lasting impact on all who knew him. Despite being diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma in September 2018, Koa’s resilience allowed him to fight the disease for six years, far surpassing doctors’ initial predictions.
His passing has left a void in the hearts of his family and friends, but his memory will live on through the love and strength he shared. The family is currently seeking financial assistance to honor Koa’s memory with a fitting memorial. So far, $270 has been raised out of a $10,000 goal, with contributions from Michelle Espero, Jaynie Fukushima, Kanaiela Dutro, and an anonymous donor.
The community has shown its support through touching Facebook posts. Janel Moral, who organized the fundraiser, shared, "The family appreciates any help during these hard times!" Others, like Haroldine Borge, Barrett Fevella, Kilo Fevella-borge, and Marie Fukushima, have also expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of love and support.
We extend our deepest condolences to Koa’s family during this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they navigate this profound loss. Mahalo piha to all who have offered their support.
