Josie Payne, a beloved member of the Fort Dodge community, passed away on October 17, 2024, in her home following a sudden illness. Josie was known for her warmth, intelligence, and a sharp sense of humor that endeared her to all who knew her. She had a deep love for music and cherished her dogs, Bixby, Cooper, and Ole.
Josie spent her early years in Fort Dodge, where she grew up alongside her older brother, Jonathan. After graduating from Fort Dodge High School in 1994, she pursued a career in nursing, earning a BS in Nursing from the University of Iowa in 2002. Josie’s career was dedicated to caring for mothers and newborns as a labor and delivery nurse in the Iowa City area, reflecting her compassion and dedication to helping others. Unfortunately, after facing medical challenges and undergoing spine surgeries in 2022, Josie had been battling severe pain and mobility issues that made it impossible for her to continue working.
Her mother, Judy Payne, has been her primary caregiver, offering both physical and financial support over the past few years. This responsibility has weighed heavily on Judy, and the community is rallying to assist the Payne family during this difficult time.
A fundraiser, organized by Darrin Fullerton on behalf of Erin Payne, has been established to help cover the funeral expenses and outstanding bills. The response has been heartfelt, with donations coming in from family, friends, and community members who loved Josie. Contributions include $1,000 from Brooke Bickford and additional donations from Erin Johnson, Jen Bachman, Kara Jean Ocenasek, and John Pemble.
Josie’s kindness and dedication to her family, patients, and friends will be remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
We extend our deepest sympathies to the Payne family. May Josie rest in peace, and may her family find strength and comfort during this time of mourning.
