Judith Ann "Judy" McGrath, a cherished figure who embraced life with adventure, creativity, and compassion, passed away on October 26, 2024, after a brief illness, surrounded by her loved ones. Her extraordinary life began in Eureka, California, where she spent her childhood among towering redwoods, and led her to an incredible journey spanning oceans and continents.
Judy’s story unfolded in remarkable ways. While she could have followed a more traditional path, she instead met John McGrath, a Newfoundland fisherman, embarking on a journey that would bring them across three oceans and deepen their family roots in Newfoundland. Later, in 1971, Judy and John, along with their five children, moved to Taloyoak, Nunavut, where they became an integral part of the community. This time in Nunavut held a special place in Judy’s heart, and her dedication to the local arts and crafts scenes resonated deeply with the people around her.
In the late 1970s, Judy and her family moved to Labrador before ultimately settling in Pakenham, Ontario, where she cultivated her renowned garden over three decades and contributed tirelessly to local events, such as the Maple Run Studio Tour and the Pakenham Horticultural Society. Judy’s work as an artist, seamstress, author, and photographer left an indelible mark on all who knew her.
Beyond her creativity, Judy’s passion for genealogy and travel led her to return to previous homes in California, Newfoundland, and Nunavut with her children and grandchildren, sharing her love of history and culture. Her adventurous spirit saw her enjoying moments from helicopter rides over Hawaii to golfing in St. Andrews, Scotland.
Her passing leaves a profound void in the lives of her family and the many communities she touched. Judy is deeply mourned by her children Lani, Janet, Sean, Karla, and Noah, along with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate nursing staff at Almonte General Hospital for their care.
A celebration of Judy’s life will take place on November 30, 2024, at the Pilon Family Funeral Home in Arnprior, Ontario. The family welcomes donations in Judy’s memory to provide school supplies and sports equipment for the children of Taloyoak, Nunavut, reflecting Judy’s enduring love for the community.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Judy’s family and friends. May her legacy of kindness, creativity, and resilience be a source of comfort and inspiration to all.
