Karen Matthews, Studio City, CA—The community is mourning the loss of Karen Matthews, who passed away following a devastating fire that tore through her family’s apartment on Colfax Ave., Studio City, on August 5th, 2024. Karen, a beloved mother, was living with her son, James Waller, who had been her caregiver for many years. The fire not only claimed her life but also left James to rebuild from the ashes of their home, which was completely destroyed in the tragedy.
In response to this heartbreaking incident, Denise Richards Millis and the Richards + Millis families have organized a fundraiser to support James Waller as he begins the daunting task of rebuilding his life. The funds raised will be used to cover Karen’s funeral expenses, as well as provide James with temporary housing, clothing, food, and other essentials during this difficult time.
As of now, the fundraiser has raised $2,205 of its $25,000 goal, with 35 donations made. The community’s support has been heartfelt, with Melissa Hernandez making the most recent donation of $20. Aaron Friedman contributed $250, making it the top donation, matched by the Richards and Millis families who made the first donation of $250.
James Waller has always been known for his generosity and willingness to help others, and now, the community he has been so good to is coming together to support him in his time of need. Although no amount of money can replace the loss of his mother, the funds raised will help alleviate some of the immediate burdens James faces as he navigates this incredibly challenging period.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to James Waller and his family as they mourn the loss of Karen Matthews. May they find peace and strength in the support of their community during this time of profound grief.
