Karim had bravely fought a ten-year battle with MELAS, a rare and incurable genetic disease that caused strokes, seizures, vision loss, and severe pain.

His passing has profoundly affected his mother, Karina Pina, a single parent who became a Registered Nurse to help others suffering from similar conditions. Throughout Karim’s illness, Karina displayed unwavering love and support, showing tremendous perseverance and humility.
In honor of Karim’s memory, Cheryl McElroy, Karina’s loving god-sister, has organized a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the funeral expenses. The goal is to raise $30,000, and the community is encouraged to contribute any amount they can. Cheryl expressed her gratitude for the support received so far, emphasizing the importance of honoring Karim’s wishes with a homegoing service.
Many in the community have shared their condolences and memories on Facebook. Alexis Cobbins shared her heartbreak, saying, "Thank you all for the birthday wishes. I enjoyed it, but my weekend ended with this devastating news. This is so heartbreaking. Any amount you can give helps." Noble Cobbins also expressed willingness to support the fundraiser.
