Karin Liberti, lovingly known as "Berti," from Largo, FL, is nearing the end of her journey, and the community is stepping forward to honor her final wishes. Michele Koonz, her devoted friend of over 20 years, has organized a fundraiser with the hope of fulfilling Berti’s heartfelt wish for a cremation and a burial at sea.
Berti spent over three decades serving as a certified nursing assistant (CNA), a career she cherished until her retirement four years ago due to ongoing dialysis for kidney failure. Originally from Germany, Berti came to New York at the age of five, where she became a U.S. citizen. Despite her health challenges, which included chronic atrial fibrillation and pulmonary fibrosis requiring constant oxygen, she faced each day with resilience and grace. Recently, after suffering a cardiac arrest on October 19, she was admitted to hospice care and, in a moment of peace, requested all essential treatments to be stopped, seeking comfort in her remaining time.
Berti’s life was a testament to joy and friendship. Known for her love of bowling with her Betty Boop-themed ball, her home was filled with Betty Boop memorabilia, reflecting her vibrant personality. Those who had the honor of her friendship cherished her for the laughter and warmth she brought to their lives. Michele and her late sister, Mary, who was also a nurse, shared many memorable moments with Berti, bringing comfort and joy to those around them. Now, Berti joins Mary, who passed in 2021, as a guardian angel to those she leaves behind.
Berti’s circle includes her younger daughter, Kimberly Liberti Turna, and two grandsons, Hunter and Aaron, who have remained close. With limited resources from social security and no funds set aside for her final expenses, Michele asks the community to help honor Berti’s final wishes by contributing to the fundraiser, which has a goal of $4,000.
As we remember Karin Liberti, we send heartfelt prayers for peace and comfort for her family and friends. May she find eternal rest, and may those who knew her find solace in the love she shared.
