Kathleen Kaui Hatchie, a cherished member of her family and community, passed away unexpectedly in California. Kathleen, affectionately known as Aunty Fats, Aunty Kat, or Kakaz, traveled to California for a critical surgery that she did not survive. Her loss has left a profound void in the hearts of her loved ones.
Kathleen was known for her vibrant personality, unwavering support, and no-nonsense attitude. Though she had no children of her own, she was a mother figure to many and a best friend to those fortunate enough to be close to her. Kathleen had a unique ability to make everyone feel loved and valued. Her home was always open, and she was the go-to person for anyone in need, even if it meant giving her last $20 without hesitation.
Throughout her life, Kathleen faced numerous health challenges, including a heart condition from a young age and a diagnosis of kidney disease in 2018. Despite these hardships, she continued to live her life with grace and resilience, surrounded by family and friends who loved her dearly. Kathleen’s strength and spirit were evident until her final days.
In August 2024, Kathleen was advised to undergo surgery in California, as the necessary treatment was unavailable in Oahu. Although she was terrified of the procedure, her family supported her decision, hoping for a successful outcome. Tragically, on August 10th, 2024, Kathleen’s lungs could no longer sustain her heart, and she passed away just two days before her scheduled surgery.
Now, her family is working to bring her body back to Oahu to honor her memory with a proper farewell. The estimated cost to transport her remains is $3,300, with additional expenses for cremation and medical bills. Kathleen’s niece, Puana Tayaba Hatchie, has organized a fundraiser to help cover these costs and provide financial support to her sisters, Martha and Mercy, who have been by Kathleen’s side throughout her journey.
Kathleen’s passing has left a deep sense of loss among those who knew her. Her family and friends remember her as a source of strength, love, and joy, and they are committed to celebrating her life as she deserves. The fundraiser, though still in its early stages, reflects the outpouring of love and support for Kathleen and her family during this difficult time.
We extend our heartfelt prayers and deepest condolences to Kathleen Kaui Hatchie’s family. May they find comfort in the memories they shared and strength in the support of their community.
