Kyriakoula Samartzis, Laverton North, VIC— Kyriakoula Samartzis, affectionately known as Koula, passed away on the night of November 12, 2024, at the age of 92 after a long battle with dementia. Her passing has left a profound impact on her son Emmanuel, who was her primary caregiver during her final years.
Koula was born in 1932 in Kritianou, Greece, and lived through the challenges of World War II alongside her husband, Constantinos, known as Con. The couple migrated to Australia in search of a better life, where they worked tirelessly to build a future together. In 1978, they opened a successful scallop fishing business in Lakes Entrance, which they operated side by side. Koula was known for her strength and determination on the boat, where she was recognized as the strongest on deck, unflinching in the face of any task.
Following Con’s passing in 2013 after a battle with cancer, Koula relied heavily on her son Emmanuel. Emmanuel devoted himself to caring for his mother as she battled dementia. However, after Emmanuel suffered a heart attack three months ago, he was forced to admit his mother to an aged care facility. Despite his hopes of eventually bringing her back home, the financial strain of arranging a proper farewell has left Emmanuel overwhelmed.
Koula did not have life or funeral insurance, and Emmanuel, who was not registered as her full-time carer, is unable to access financial assistance for her funeral expenses. As he faces the immense burden of grief, Emmanuel has been given just two weeks to arrange and cover the funeral costs.
A fundraiser has been set up by David Martin to assist with these expenses, raising $625 AUD so far. The community has come together in support, with donations from individuals such as Manny G, Anne Newnham, and an anonymous contributor.
