Laurie Apps, a cherished member of the Houghton Lake community, has passed away following a sudden stroke on Saturday, October 19th. Laurie, known for her unwavering dedication to her family and her career as a caregiver, leaves behind a legacy of resilience, compassion, and boundless love.
Throughout her life, Laurie faced immense challenges with courage. In 2006, her second son was in a coma for several months after a near-fatal car accident. Laurie devoted herself to his recovery, helping him return to a fully functional life. She then continued her work as a Certified Nursing Assistant until 2010, when her oldest son, a decorated war veteran, was diagnosed with terminal cancer at just 26 years old. Guided by her motto, "hope not hospice," Laurie helped her son find strength and extended his life significantly, a testament to her enduring hope and determination.
In addition to these family trials, Laurie also bore the losses of her younger brother and her mother, a series of tragedies that would weigh on anyone. Despite the personal toll, she continued to provide for others, often at the expense of her own well-being.
Michael Stowell has established a fundraiser to cover Laurie’s memorial service and end-of-life expenses, as she had no life insurance or financial provisions to ease these final costs. The family welcomes any support to honor Laurie’s life and her selfless commitment to others.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Laurie’s loved ones. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time.
