Luke Tawerling, originally from Woleai, Yap, passed away on Friday, September 13th, 2024, after battling long-standing mental health challenges. He was known for his kind heart, humility, and the joy he brought to those around him. Luke had made Hawaii his home after moving there for further education, but his struggles with mental health grew more challenging over the years.
His family, based in Maui, did everything they could to support him—ensuring he received regular care and offering their love and guidance. However, mental health issues can often be overwhelming, and Luke faced many of his struggles on his own. His passing serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of addressing mental health within Pacific Island communities, where such issues are often overlooked.
A fundraiser has been set up by Samuel Foulchag to help cover the expenses of transporting Luke’s body from Hawaii back to his homeland in Woleai, where he will be laid to rest. The goal is to raise $6,000 to support these costs, and so far, $350 has been donated by three generous supporters: Lohelani Siuta, Kalena Naauao-Siuta, and Eun Yamada.
The community is coming together to honor Luke’s memory and assist his family during this time of loss. Any donations, regardless of the amount, will go a long way in ensuring that Luke receives the farewell he deserves.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Luke’s family and friends as they navigate this heartbreaking time.
