Mao Cha, Hickory, NC — The community is mourning the loss of Mao Cha, who passed away on July 8, 2024. She was 54 years old. Mao was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, cherished for her strength, love, and dedication to her family.
Mao’s battle with metastatic cancer lasted two years, during which she endured numerous chemo and radiation treatments. Despite the aggressive treatments, the doctors were unable to pinpoint the cancer’s origin, leading to various chemo regimens that often left her extremely ill. By January 2024, Mao’s body no longer responded to the treatments, and her condition deteriorated rapidly.
In addition to her cancer, Mao suffered a stroke a month before her passing, which further weakened her. She became bedridden, unable to eat or drink normally, and spent her final days in hospice care, surrounded by her loving family.
Mao is survived by her husband, Leng Lee, three sons and their wives, two daughters and their husbands, and 14 grandchildren. During her last days, her family took turns spending sleepless nights with her, providing comfort and love until the end.
The family is now facing the significant financial burden of funeral costs and has organized a fundraiser to help cover the expenses. Sally Lo, Mao’s daughter-in-law, has set a goal of $20,000 to ensure that Mao receives the memorial she deserves. As of now, the fundraiser is seeking contributions from the community to meet this goal by August 1, 2024.
