Marla Gail Sikes, Augusta, GA—Marla Gail Sikes passed away suddenly on October 13, 2024, following complications from a recent knee replacement surgery. Gail, as she was fondly known, was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who had survived breast cancer for three years. Her family and friends are left heartbroken by the unexpected loss.
Gail underwent outpatient knee replacement surgery on Friday, October 11, 2024, and returned home to recover with her daughter and granddaughters by her side. Just two days later, on Sunday, October 13, she began to have trouble breathing and was taken to the hospital by ambulance. Tragically, despite the efforts of EMTs and hospital staff, she could not be revived. A pulmonary embolism had passed through her lungs, causing her untimely death.
Gail’s passing leaves a deep void in the lives of her loved ones. She had been a pillar of support for her family, caring for them through difficult times, including the loss of her husband Keith in 2018. Her family remembers her as a woman of great compassion, always putting others first. Gail dedicated her life to helping those around her, from her immediate family to the elderly she cared for throughout her life.
A GoFundMe fundraiser has been set up by Pam Cooksey to help Gail’s family with funeral expenses, as Gail did not have medical or life insurance. The family is currently planning her funeral, and they are asking for support to alleviate the financial burden during this difficult time.
Gail’s infectious smile, love for life, and the joy she found in simple pleasures like collecting seashells at the beach will be cherished by those who knew her. Her family and friends are left to hold on to the beautiful memories she created with them.
We extend our deepest sympathies to Marla Gail Sikes’ family and friends during this heartbreaking time. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
