Mary C. Gogo-Wilson, DeKalb, IL—The family of Mary C. Gogo-Wilson is mourning her recent passing. Mary passed away peacefully at home after bravely enduring two decades of health challenges. She was 74 years old.
Mary was known for her vibrant spirit and artistic talent, having built a notable career as a painter and teacher. Her art, especially her satirical series featuring "rats personified," brought humor and sharp social commentary to the forefront. She completed her Master’s studies at the Art Institute of Chicago and later taught college-level art classes.
Beyond the art world, Mary’s life was deeply rooted in family and community. She and her husband, Gavin, ran the beloved Hillside Restaurant in DeKalb, where she worked for 35 years. Known for her warmth and attention to detail, Mary made every customer feel special, a trait she carried into all aspects of her life.
Mary’s passion extended to her love of gardening, where she transformed her surroundings into a colorful landscape of wildflowers. She believed in the beauty of nature, and it is fitting that her family has chosen to honor her memory with a commemorative tree in DeKalb.
Mary is survived by her husband Gavin; her sons Jason Gogo, Holden Wilson (Alessandra), and Adam Wilson (Morgan); her sister Marilynne Voris; her brother Samuel (Linda); and her grandchildren William Gogo, Samuel Gogo, and Thea Wilson, who were her greatest joys in life.
In this difficult time, Alessandra Wilson has organized a fundraiser for those who wish to honor Mary’s legacy by contributing to the planting of a memorial tree in her name.
We offer our heartfelt condolences to the Gogo-Wilson family. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they navigate this immense loss.
