Pittsburgh, PA— Mohamed El Hadi, a beloved young man known for his bright spirit and talent, tragically passed away in May. His former colleagues and friends from the restaurant 40 North at Alphabet City, which closed in July, are now gathering together to honor his memory. Mohamed was just 24 years old, a brilliant individual with a calm, gentle nature and a sharp sense of humor that endeared him to everyone around him.
A fundraiser has been organized by Jacob Paul, a former coworker and server at 40 North, to raise funds for two important memorials: a grave marker and a dedicated bench in Allegheny Commons Park. The goal is to raise $4,150, with $2,150 intended for the grave marker and $1,500 for the bench, offering a peaceful place for Mohamed’s friends and community to remember him. So far, $1,060 has been raised through the generous contributions of 15 donors, with the top donation coming from Craig Caputo, who gave $250.
Mohamed was admired not only for his intelligence but also for his passionate work on a documentary about political corruption in Sudan. His friendships ran deep at 40 North, where his punctual daily arrival was something of a hallmark. When Mohamed didn’t appear for work on May 23, his friends feared the worst. His body was tragically discovered 10 days later, leaving his loved ones heartbroken.
In keeping with his family’s customs, Mohamed’s burial was arranged quickly, but a grave marker was not purchased in time. The current fundraiser aims to remedy this, ensuring that Mohamed’s final resting place is properly marked. Additionally, the park bench in his North Side neighborhood will serve as a place for reflection and remembrance.
The staff of 40 North, led by Jacob Paul, Kara Selberis, and Chef Beth Zozula, are deeply grateful for the love and support they’ve received from the Pittsburgh community over the past few months. They hope to reach their fundraising goal soon to commemorate Mohamed’s memory as he so richly deserves.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Mohamed El Hadi’s family and friends during this painful time. May his memory be a blessing, and may those who knew him find peace and comfort.
