Nate Hunt—The Kinston community and Top Gun Softball family are mourning the loss of Nate Hunt, a cherished umpire who passed away unexpectedly on July 27th due to a suspected heart attack. Nate was an integral part of the Top Gun umpire crew, dedicated to the sport and the players for 23 years.
Nate’s sudden passing has left a significant void among his family, friends, and the softball community. He was known for his passion for sports, umpiring baseball and softball, and his commitment to giving kids the opportunity to play. His love for the game and his dedication to the sport were evident in his actions and the relationships he built over the years.
Mary Williams, who is organizing a fundraiser for Nate’s funeral and burial expenses, described him as one of the best people you could ever meet. "He was a giver, never asking for anything in return," she said. "He left a mark on many on and off the ballfield, from teaching, telling his stories, joking, and just being a great friend."
Nate is survived by his son and granddaughter, whom he loved unconditionally. He was often seen at the ballfield with his granddaughter, sharing his passion for sports with her. Nate’s family and the entire Top Gun community are deeply affected by this loss.
The fundraiser organized by Mary Williams has so far raised $545 out of the $10,000 goal, with donations from Amy Vause, Alisa DeJoseph, and Mary Williams. The funds will help ease the family’s financial burden during this difficult time. Donations can be made through the fundraiser page, and every contribution is appreciated.
