Oleksii Smolka, who sought refuge in Montreal, passed away on October 4, 2024, at the age of 48. Originally from Ukraine, Oleksii was diagnosed with cancer in 2023, a year after his arrival in Canada. Despite doctors’ hope for recovery, his condition took a turn for the worse just days before his passing. Found unconscious in his room, he could not be revived despite quick medical intervention.
Oleksii was known for his kind and supportive nature. Although his illness and treatment limited his social connections in Canada, those who knew him remember him as a sensitive and joyful person who was always ready to help others. His passing leaves a void in the lives of his family and friends. Oleksii’s mother, who lives in Ukraine, and his sister, residing in Germany, are deeply affected by the loss. His family is now seeking support to cover the costs of the funeral and to repatriate his ashes to Ukraine, as per his mother’s wishes.
St Sophie Montreal has organized a fundraiser to assist with the funeral expenses, and generous donations have already begun to pour in, including contributions from Oleh Tyshchenko and others. The funds will be managed by Anna Ivashchenko, a family friend, who is overseeing the arrangements in Canada.
The community has shared their sorrow and condolences on social media. Vladyslav Pashynskyy expressed heartfelt thoughts on Facebook, showing the depth of grief felt by those who knew Oleksii.
We extend our deepest sympathies to the Smolka family. May his soul rest in peace, and may his loved ones find comfort during this difficult time. Eternal memory to Oleksii Smolka.
