Rachelle Benett (nee Gade), Penn Valley, PA—The community mourns the loss of Rachelle Benett, fondly known as Shelly, who passed away peacefully at her home on August 29, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Shelly was 86 years old and is remembered for her lifelong dedication to education, both as a teacher and a mentor.
Born and raised in the Bronx, NY, Shelly was deeply influenced by music and the arts, becoming an accomplished pianist. She graduated from the New York High School of Music and Art, which marked the beginning of her enduring passion for the arts. Shelly’s love for theater was a constant throughout her life, and she often shared these experiences with her family and friends.
Shelly’s career in education spanned over 35 years, during which she impacted the lives of countless children across the country. Her commitment to teaching continued even after her retirement in January 2001, as she tutored students in her community. Shelly’s belief in the power of education extended beyond her own family. In her final years, she developed a special bond with her trusted home health aide’s daughter, Missy, and in her honor, her family has established an education fund to support Missy’s future.
A fundraiser has been organized by Shelly’s granddaughter, Marisa Sobel, to honor her legacy and support Missy’s education. The goal is to raise $15,000, and while donations have yet to start, the family is hopeful that Shelly’s memory will inspire others to contribute to this cause.
Funeral services for Shelly will be held on Monday, September 2, 2024, at Crescent Memorial Park in Pennsauken, NJ. Relatives and friends are invited to gather at 10:30 A.M., with the service beginning promptly at 11:00 A.M.
