Ramon F Alonso, affectionately known as Ray to his friends and colleagues, passed away on September 14th at the University of Miami Hospital. His death has left the Miami community, particularly those who worked alongside him in politics and ministry, deeply saddened.
Ray Alonso was a well-known figure in Miami, dedicating over four decades to helping political candidates get elected. His efforts culminated in working with Bruce Kaplan’s successful bid for the Miami-Dade County Commission, after which Ray took on the role of Director of Constituent Services. In this capacity, he focused on supporting the poor communities of East Little Havana and Overtown, making a lasting impact through his advocacy for those in need.
A Cuban exile, Ray Alonso held onto the hope of one day returning to a free Cuba. Despite loving his life in the United States, he never became an American citizen, staying deeply connected to his Cuban heritage and contributing to numerous Cuban organizations in Miami.
Ray’s passing has left a void among the many friends and colleagues who cherished his commitment and passion. Sadly, no plans or funds were arranged for his burial, and a memorial fund has been set up by Charles Safdie to assist with funeral expenses. As of today, the fundraiser has collected $250 of its $9,500 goal.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Ray Alonso’s family and friends as they navigate this difficult time. May his memory live on through the lives he touched in both his professional and personal endeavors.
