Richard "Spider" Bowen, Oroville, CA—The community mourns the loss of Richard "Spider" Bowen, who passed away on October 4, 2024. After enduring over 25 years in prison, Richard had been granted freedom on November 30, 2023. Unfortunately, he was fighting a losing battle with stage 4 bladder cancer, which had spread to his pelvic bone. Despite treatment, his health continued to decline, and he required full-time care.
In July, Richard was admitted to hospice care in Yuba City. With no living family members remaining, those close to him, including his friend and former cellmate Benjamin Lowery, had become his chosen family. Plans had been made for Richard to donate his body to science, followed by cremation, as he had wished. However, unforeseen complications arose, disqualifying him from this arrangement shortly after his passing.
Currently, Richard is at Holy Cross Funeral Home, and a $1,200 cremation fee is needed to ensure he is laid to rest according to his wishes. Benjamin Lowery, who is organizing the fundraiser, expressed his heartfelt appreciation for any support received during this time of need.
Our deepest sympathies are extended to all who knew Richard Bowen. May his memory bring comfort, and may he rest in peace.
